Patrick J. Shea, MD, FACC
Background
Dr. Shea was a founding member of Ohio Heart and Vascular Center in 1995. He is currently the Director of the Northeast Cardiology Center, an out-patient cardiac catherization laboratory which is a joint venture between Bethesda-based physicians and Bethesda North Hospital. Prior to that, from 1992 through 2003, he was Director of Cardiology at Bethesda Hospitals.
He is an invasive cardiologist and clinical cardiologist. “In laymen’s terms, I’m a diagnostician, in charge of all the diagnostic testing that needs to be done to confirm a diagnosis.” He sees the patients before and after their interventional procedures and follows-up on them long term.
For Dr. Shea, the most rewarding part of his practice is having an opportunity to establish a relationship with his patients. “Often times they’re in trouble, and there are big issues to be dealt with. And in cardiology these days, we have so many tools to intercede and get patients out of trouble. Usually they have a medical problem that requires on-going therapy. So I get to know these patients over many years. Many have been with me now for almost 20 year. When I see them, it’s like seeing old friends.”
He decided to become a doctor when he was 10 years old, because there were surgeons in the basement of his house. But they weren’t on duty; they were studying art with Shea’s artist father, who conducted classes out of the Shea home. “That was my first contact with medicine. As I got to know these doctors, I thought it might be rewarding to become one myself.”
These days, Dr. Shea is a technology enthusiast, an avid skier, not-particularly-talented musician, uninspired but original composer and a passionate oenophile. As a connoisseur of fines wines, he is a member of the Society of Bacchus.
His wife is a hospital administrator, and they have two teenage children, a boy and a girl. They also have two cats, CeCe and J.C., but the most sociable member of the Shea family is Mikie, an 85 pound, mixed breed of chow and shepherd. When Mikie wants to come inside, he doesn’t yapp and scratch like other dogs. He just stands on his hind legs and rings the doorbell. Dr. Shea doesn’t take any credit for that feat. Mikie taught himself when he was a mere pup.
One of Dr. Shea’s favorite pieces of medical advice–and he doesn’t remember who shared it with him—is this: “When taking a history and the patient is describing symptoms, especially pain, get them to use their hands. It is far more descriptive than their words. And it’s never a problem for the Italians.”
