Ian J. Sarembock, MB, CHB, MD, FACC
Background
Dr. Sarembock, an interventional cardiologist, brings an international outlook and expertise to Cincinnati. He was born and raised in South Africa and received his medical degree and doctorate at the University of Cape Town, the same institution where Dr. Christian Bernard made medical history a few years earlier by performing the world’s first human heart transplant.
Dr. Sarembock values his medical training in South Africa, because as he describes it, “At the time, Cape Town University was the real powerhouse of clinical cardiology with a group of absolutely phenomenal cardiologists in the 60s, 70s, 80s, who really made a huge impression and advanced many of the concepts in clinical cardiology at that time…
Also, you had a wide spectrum of cardiovascular disease–basically a hybrid of first and third worlds. It offered a young trainee a diverse patient population and medical conditions.”
Upon his arrival in the United States in 1986, Dr. Sarembock spent two years at Yale University as Research Associate in the Cardiovascular Division, then moved on to the University of Virginia (UVA), where he taught and practiced medicine. He was Director of the Coronary Care Unit, as well as the Harrison Distinguished Teaching Professor of Internal Medicine and Director of the Center for Interventional Cardiology. He helped create and maintain an extraordinary translational and clinical trials research program at UVA, which included original hypothesis-based research as well as being a leading participant nationally in NIH and industry supported clinical trials. In 2007, he joined the Ohio Heart and Vascular Center, where he is currently the Associate Director of The Heart and Vascular Center at The Christ Hospital.
Among his numerous awards and accolades are the J. Edwin Wood Jr. Cardiovascular Division Attending Teaching Award and the Clinical Excellence Award. He was also included in the Best Doctors in America® in 2003-2004 and 2007-2008, Best Doctors in Cincinnati 2008, and Marquis Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare 2009-2010..
Dr. Sarembock is a consultative cardiologist specializing in coronary heart disease, valvular heart disease and adult congenital heart disease. In addition, he performs invasive and interventional procedures, including assessment of coronary artery disease, heart function and valvular function. He enjoys the subspeciality philiosphy of Ohio Heart as a practice. “I’m surrounded by a pretty unique group of private practitioners. People really focus on their strengths. Coupled with that is a unique opportunity to participate in cutting-edge clinical research through the Lindner Center. I’ve been extremely happy and impressed.”
Dr. Sarembock’s research career has spanned everything from basic science to clinical trials. He has authored a wide range of publications in the research and treatment of heart disease. Based on his research, he has consistently published in high-impact journals and has contributed more than 250 peer-reviewed articles, abstracts, book chapters, and invited publications in cardiology. In addition, he is a peer reviewer for many of the journals in both clinical and investigational cardiovascular medicine.
Alongside his research, Dr. Sarembock finds hands-on medicine rewarding, particularly preventive cardiology. “I think in longer terms–identifying major risk factors in patients and treating them with medication, education and with careful follow-up. Preventing people from having heart attacks, strokes and developing heart failure due to blood pressure or cholesterol treatment or management of diabetes –that’s what’s important. In the big scheme of things, paying attention and taking care of risk factors is extremely gratifying. That said, successfully stenting an occluded artery in the setting of a heart attack is most rewarding.”
Dr. Sarembock and his wife Ghita, an esthetician, have been married almost 35 years. They have two grown children, a son and daughter. When he’s not saving lives, he likes to read non-fiction, biographies and history. He likes to watch college sports, although he misses the rugby and cricket of his youth. He and his wife also attend theater regularly and travel. They’ve recently become grandparents for the first time, so they plan to relax by spending time with their new granddaughter.
