Dr. Ivey Receives Kaplan Award

The American Heart Association has chosen Dr. Tom Ivey, MD, FACC, FACS, as the recipient of the 2009 Samuel Kaplan, MD Visionary Award.  Dr. Ivey was chosen due to his many accomplishments and contributions to the cardiovascular field.  More  information on his outstanding accomplishments will be presented at the Heart Ball on February, 21, 2009.

Dr. Sam Kaplan helped pioneer the use of the heart-lung machine, the use of cardiac catheterization and echocardiography. He was the founder and former director of cardiology at Cincinnati Children’s and the former professor of pediatric cardiology at UC.  By the time he retired in 1987, he was considered among the top five most effective academic cardiology leaders in the United States.  Dr. Kaplan passed away in 2004 at the age of 81.

 Each year the American Heart Association presents the Samuel Kaplan MD, Visionary Award to individuals carrying on the tradition of excellence in cardiovascular science exemplified by Dr. Kaplan.  Receiving this award is a tremendous honor.  Please join us in congratulating Dr. Ivey for this recognition.
