Congestive heart failure (cardiomyopathy) remains a major health issue in the United States. It is estimated that five million Americans have symptomatic heart failure and CHF remains the number one reason for being admitted to the hospital in the United States. A half million new cases are diagnosed every year, and as the population ages in the United States, the incidence and prevalence of congestive heart failure will continue to increase.
Care of patients with congestive heart failure continues to evolve with newer therapeutic options including newer drugs and devices. The Ohio Heart Health Center has a comprehensive congestive heart failure program directed by Drs. Menon and Chung who have had extensive training in congestive heart failure and cardiac transplantation. They are supported by nurses and nurse practitioners at each of the offices for a team approach in the care of these patients. Presently, we offer M.D. follow-up, nurse practitioner follow-up, and congestive heart failure education to help the patient understand their disease process. The patient education module includes diet, exercise, and medication compliance. Patients have direct access to CHF nurses and nurse practitioners to discuss their problems and concerns. This helps alleviate unnecessary emergency room visits and subsequent hospitalizations. The CHF program works closely with the electrophysiologist in Ohio Heart to ensure that patients that qualify for ICDs (defibrillators) and Bi Ventricular pacers and referred approporpriately. Call 1-866-379-7055 for more information on our CHF program.
Through the Lindner Center for Research and Education we are able to offer patients cutting edge medications and device therapies which are still in the research phase as part of a clinical trial. Most of these studies are of no cost to the patient and it offers the patients the newest treatment modalities for their conditions.
We also conduct quarterly public forums for congestive heart failure which helps educate the public about congestive heart failure. Various expert speakers are present during these symposiums which are free to the public.
Presently the standard medications for the treatment of congestive heart failure include
- ß-blockers (carvedilol, metoprolol, and bisoprolol).
- ACE inhibitors.
- Angiotensin receptor blockers.
- Diuretics (Lasix and HCTZ).
- Spironolactone.
- Inspra (Eplrenone).
In patients that qualify, we offer biventricular pacing, defibrillators, intermittent Natrecor infusions, and home Natrecor infusions. This type of team approach for the care of a complex disease such as congestive heart failure is unique in the tri-state area. Over 1000 patients are taken care of by the CHF team.
